Any Robby Lamothe fans out there?

Despite being, overweight, foul tempered and ugly, old allatsea is a bit of a sensitive sort when all said and done (honest). A fan of the arts, with a tendency to find song and music the most emotive of the forms.

Anyone out there listened to Rob Lamothe? if you’re of the X Factor persuasion then the answer to that of course will be no, but hopefully there are many out there in bloggy land who aren’t.

Anyway, from his  ‘Being Human ‘ album of 1999 (possibly 98), here are the words to The Ship Song, they’re very lovely……indeed.

hotel winston room 303

amsterdam and me i’m high

raphael playin guitar in the dark

scared of a man with one good eye

now i’m on the road from kamp-lintfort to cologne

there’s cows on the bridge

i’m a long way from anywhere

240 miles from an island

off the eastern canadian coast

where the unsinkable did the unthinkable

she went down she went down

these thing i know…the world’s not flat

it’s round and riding on a turtle’s back

and my black mood is causing the weather

i know i will always be

240 miles from an island

off the eastern canadian coast

where the unsinkable did the unthinkable

she went down, she went down

likes some big old rusty whore

lyin there covered in blue

tonight i’m on that island

i’m breathing in the water

tonight my heart is on that ship with you

i make paper airplanes for my four year old

and he’s pretty sure it’s magic

rosemary tells me the moon is in leo

so i’m doubly charismatic

and i sang my children to sleep again tonight

i swear i’m the king of the world

i swear i’m the king of an island

off the eastern canadian coast

where the unsinkable did the unthinkable

she went down she went down

like some big old rusty whore

lyin there covered in blue

tonight i’m on that island

i’m floating in the water

i’m sinking in the water

i’m drowning in the water

tonight my heart is on that ship with you

And finally, just in case you think I’ve made him (Robby) up. A review of same said album.

If you’re expecting the riverdogs (lamothe’s previous band) you’re going to be disapointed, but then that’s no bad thing! Musically ranging from Kings X-ish riffing (clean) to blues (blue ray) to folk (Ship song), the album still comes across as contemporary and grunge flavoured. Some very memorable melodies (misery and ship song particularly) with superbly personal and honest lyrics. This album really should have sold far more than it did! The music is always performed with an ear for what the song needs, rather than in an attempt to be flash, although the bass playing particularly is wonderfully melodic at times. A must for anyone who likes well written, thoughtfull music.

Cheerio for now

About allatsea

Sixty year old master-mariner. Absolutely gorgeous. Well wedged.....when compared to a Nairobi street urchin. Sorted, in that I haven't been in court recently. Hopelessly optimistic, terminally disappointed. Good with cats and other fluffy things. No musical talent. Generous to a fault provided it's someone else's round. Political centreist with far right and left viewpoints. A green activist from the hydrocarbon position with nuclear leanings. Averse to avarice but always happy to receive lottery wins, gifts, windfalls, legacies, prizes and wet sloppy kisses.
