Genoa, again. Allatsea’s on the way home courtesy of BA. Also on the flight are the referee and the three match officials who had the dubious pleasure of abandoning last night’s footy between Italy and Serbia. Some footy fans on the same flight seem to have accorded them something approaching hero worship. Ah well, that’s sports fans for you. Bless their little but happy minds.
Cool grey and damp here today, the Italians appear to have fully embraced the change in meteo conditions with some degree of overkill. While allatsea and his Northern European compatriots are suitably attired in light polo type shirts and summer linen, the locals are adorned with chunky ski sweaters and fluffy winter coats. There are quite a few full on Arctic type hats to be seen too. Crikey, talk about melodramatic, the temperature’s hovering around 20 degrees for goodness sake.
This is probably the last time allatsea will be in this part of the world. That was the last of the contracted trials and all those in attendance seemed to be happy with the result. There’s even a rumour that the lovely (if you can actually describe a shipyard as ‘lovely’ then surely Riva Trigosa deserves that accolade) yard will be closed down in around 2 years time when the current order book is delivered. Very sad, 800 yard folk plus hundreds more subbies cast on that great scrapheap that is unemployment. Depressing thoughts indeed.
Talking of depressing thoughts, it’s nearly ‘pay your tax time’ once again, this in addition to the fascism that is PAYE (groan), gin duty, diesel duty and VAT. It doesn’t bear thinking about. Still it’s nice to know that at allatsea towers we’re contributing to keeping the hordes of benefit quaffing, oxygen stealing, untermensch alive and well, and, judging from the streets of Fannit, well supplied with XXX strong lager and kilos of spliff. The great UK socialist model marches ever forward.
On a happy note however, the Chilean mine rescue. Nearly a dozen out as I write this bit. I’m not a religious chap but am tempted to pray that they all get out. Wondrous, heart lifting stuff so far.
