Great grandaddy Robert the Devil

Allatsea comes from a lineage of maritime folk and no mistake, your honour.

Daddy allatsea was a sailor, grandad allatsea was a sailor and great grandaddy allatsea was a Thames waterman, a barge owner, drunk, philanderer, sometime pugilist and devil. In fact that’s  how he was known, Robert ‘the devil’ Austin.

Aaaah, how we love him………..sigh.

Putting on the administrator’s head for a bit; yes it is just about impossible to read so allatsea shall make an effort to get it transcribed into text and it’ll be posted in due course.

Whir whir, click click………….goodness gracious………………………… he is thick!

No need for a transcription, a link to a PDF file will do the trick. (I know, a poet and he didn’t know it).

Newspaper cutting link follows.

About allatsea

Sixty year old master-mariner. Absolutely gorgeous. Well wedged.....when compared to a Nairobi street urchin. Sorted, in that I haven't been in court recently. Hopelessly optimistic, terminally disappointed. Good with cats and other fluffy things. No musical talent. Generous to a fault provided it's someone else's round. Political centreist with far right and left viewpoints. A green activist from the hydrocarbon position with nuclear leanings. Averse to avarice but always happy to receive lottery wins, gifts, windfalls, legacies, prizes and wet sloppy kisses.

Robert Austin was my great grandfather as well. I was born in 1947, we lived with my grandparents Joseph &Maybelle Austin at 155 West street in Erith. My mother was Joan Austin, she had two brothers, Norman and Joe, and a sister Doreen. I think that my grandmothers family lived next door, they were called Parkes. I think that my grandfather worked on the ballast wharf at Erith while we lived in West street.

Very interesting Jeff, many thanks for dropping a line. My nan, my dad’s mum, was Violet Austin, daughter of Robert the Devil. She married a William (Bill) Howell (my surname is Howell)in the late 1920’s. My dad, Roy Howell, was born in 1930, he died in 1986. Violet and Bill lived (during my lifetime) at 247 Willow Road in Dartford. Bill died in 1970 and Violet in 1985.
