Well the much heralded Euro-summit held last night to address the migration crisis didn’t offer up very much did it. A couple of bob to the aid agencies and a promise to think a bit more on what to do next. No surprise when all said and done but disappointing that so little was achieved.
Allatsea is a tadge confused as to Germany’s ‘all are welcome’ approach. The following is a snip from a commentator on a Grauniad forum. It may have hit several nails on the head.
“Except that densely populated European countries with a high price of living are not the most efficient places to help refugees: places with cheap housing and cheap food are.
While some refugees have a case for resettlement in the West due to cultural differences (e.g. Assyrian Christians and Druze minorities) the drive to welcome all over here has three primary motivating factors:
1) White guilt – an unproductive emotion based on a poor understanding of history
2) Neoliberalism – the capitalist desire to drive down our wages to increase their profits.
3) The desire for infinite growth – the levelling off of European population to manageable standards frightens those who cannot imagine a world where the rich do not continuously get richer. It’s an attitude that is destroying the planet along with every welfare state in the West and we need to move beyond it if we are to thrive as a species. Shrinking an oversized population during an automation revolution is not a bad thing.”
